Singapore – this was the perfect place to stop on the way. We met another couple also on honeymoon in Bali and they’d gone there direct from London and had travelled for about 30hours! Felt a little smug at how much more enjoyable our route to Bali had been. The Marina bay sands is a truly incredible hotel, a work of art. It was expensive, but worth every penny in my mind.
Sumatra – yes the accommodation was a lot more basic here, and we only got a twin room rather than a double, but what an incredible experience it was. The orangutans are such awesome animals, getting so close to them felt like a real privilege. We saw so many more than I expected to, including some baby ones!
The flight from Sumatra to bali was a little eventful too. When we checked in for the flight, they didn’t tell us we had to change planes half way, so there was a bit of panic with an air stewardess rushing to find us and rush us to the connecting plane!
Bali – whilst its difficult to pick a highlight of the trip, I think the Viceroy itself wins that accolade. We knew from the website this was going to be special, but seeing it in real life is something else. I don’t think it’s possible to top this hotel as a honeymoon location. Every aspect of the place is perfectly designed, the staff are attentive but not over the top and the views are just stunning. There were quite a few other honeymoon guests staying there as well, but the staff always made us feel like the most important people there….that’s when you know the staff have it spot on. We got lots of nice little treats throughout the week- both for being our honeymoon and both our birthdays!
The only slight downside here (and this was our fault for not checking when we booked) was that we were in a different villa to what we expected. I didn’t think to check the photos of the villas against the names as I stupidly assumed the pool villa would be the one with the pool overlooking the jungle. Those ones are actually the terrace villas.
The pool villa was hardly a let down though – it was stunning, it just didn’t quite have the views of the terrace ones that are higher up. The hotel were great though and we switched rooms (for a small extra fee) to a deluxe terrace villa for the last two days.
If you book anyone here in future though, I think it definitely has to be one of the terrace style villas – they are just so special!
The only other bit of feedback here is that I think we left a little earlier than needed to get our connecting boat to Lombok. We were picked up at 6am, and at the port just after 7am. The boat didn’t leave until 9, so there was quite a long wait (and sadly it was raining that day). A 7am pick up would have still left plenty of time.
Lombok – this was a lovely way to end our trip. Qunici villas is another great hotel. Wherever we went after the viceroy was going to have an impossible act to follow, but the setting was still pretty good. The spa here was also just incredible – and great value too.
Thanks so much again for everything.
