Accessible by sea plane from Male, this small island (900 x 250m) comprises of lush green interior surrounded by fine white sandy beaches and encircled by fringe reef. A more beautiful scenery would be hard to find. The multi-award winning Vilamendhoo Island Resort offers rooms with either garden or sea views, or water bungalows, built on stilts over the shallows, and come equipped with all the luxuries one would expect at a high end resort like this one. Accommodation includes full board – buffet style meals offering a variety of international and regional cuisines are served on a wooden deck or on the sand under a thatched roof. The sea side Duniye spa offers a full range of treatments (traditional and modern) with an emphasis on healing practices from Asia and Africa. Staff at Vilamendhoo will gladly arrange excursions to local markets, fishing, snorkeling or whale shark viewing trips.
The diving here promises the same warm water (26-30C) one might expect in the region. Despite the damage the 1998 El Nino caused to the coral, there is regrowth and a lot of reef fish activity. The lagoon offers a safe nursery and juvenile sharks and rays congregate there. There is a good chance of seeing white tip, grey, silver tip, guitar and zebra sharks as well as turtles while diving in the area. Manta rays can often be spotted at Manta Point between June and October. Whale sharks are very often seen in the area (year round) and day trips to nearby Mamigili, a Whale Shark National Park, can be arranged. Dolphins are often seen from the boat.
