Located in the center of the Coral Triangle, on the outskirts of Komodo National Park, Kalimaya Resort offers spectacular muck, reef and drift diving opportunities. It is the first dedicated dive resort in East Sumbawa Island and the only dive operator offering day trip diving to West Komodo islands, Gili Banta, and Sangeang Volcano, so one almost always has these untouched reefs to oneself. This tour will be led by Paul “Duxy” Duxfield, a well known and widely published photographer who will be giving talks, workshops and a general helping hand to all photographers on the tour.
Our trip begins in Bali where we meet for drinks and a meal at the hotel. The following morning we travel together to Bima, a town on Sumbawa Island. From here we transfer to the beautiful Kalimaya Dive Resort, our base for the coming 10 nights.
Kalimaya Dive Resort has lovely sea-front bungalows built with materials sourced from local communities and built in traditional Indonesia style by local teams. The spacious bungalows all have air-conditioning, private bathrooms and covered private terraces. The seaside pool offers a great view and place to relax after a days diving. The large open sided diving area provides delicious meals, served family-style on a large communal table. There is a wide variety of dishes served with flavours influenced by Indonesian and international fare. Kalimaya tries to source as much produce as possible from the nearby villages which rely on income from farming and fishing.
While here we have two boats dives scheduled a day. The dive sites here are vast and plentiful, and almost entirely untouched and it is easy to see how Komodo gets its reputation as some having some of the world’s best diving. Sloping reefs turned manta-cleaning stations mean excellent chances to dive with giant mantas. There are pinnacle, sea mount and cavern sites around, overgrown with hard and soft corals which are home to several species of reef fish and critter. Schools of trevally and barracuda, hawksbill and green turtles, and black-tip, grey and white-tip reef sharks abound. There is also a fantastic house reef at Kalimaya that is fascinating to dive. Some of the critters here include Bumblebee Shrimp, Rhinopia, Candy Crabs, Starry Night Octopus and Bobtail squid. The package includes unlimited house reef dives.
We will make a stop on a secluded island to see the infamous Komodo Dragons in the wild.
After our days enjoying diving from Kalimaya Resort, we travel together to Jogjakarta where we will spend a night at the fabulous Phoenix Hotel. From here will enjoy a city tour. This includes visiting the Kraton (a walled city of about 25000 people, including the current Sultan) and water castle (also known as “the garden of the Sultan”) We will also visit the Prambanan Temple complex (a complex consisting of 240 temples circa 8th century AD) where we will enjoy a Ramayan Ballet performance.
From here will transfer by car to the exquisite Plataran Hotel, about an hour away, where we will spend the remaining nights of the tour. From here we will enjoy the sunrise over Borobudur Temple, as well as a Candirejo Village excursion.
