This Sumatra Land Extension provides a fabulous opportunity to spend some time in comfort in the Sumatran jungle, where wild orangutans roam free. We recommend a 2-3 night stay here.
The Ecolodge is situated near the village of Bukit Lawang, in the Northern province of Sumatra. This lovely resort is nestled between the jungle and the river, and offers beautiful views of the surrounds. The resort has a magnificent new restaurant and lounge area, made from all locally sourced bamboo and mud. The resort is environmentally responsible in terms of materials, waste management, energy usage, and supporting local economy. Spending time here allows a unique opportunity to get close to nature and enjoy the serenity.
There is lots to do in the area including bird-watching, hiking, village tours, trekking to bat caves, local organic farms tour, short raft on the river, but the primary reason people visit this area is the proliferation of orangutans, some wild and others previously rehabilitated and released. Tours range from short walks around the resort to several days (and nights!) in the jungle.
Just sitting by the river one may spot orangutans nesting for the night, as well as other species of primate like gibbons, macaques and slow loris among others. There are also hornbills and several other specie of bird around to enjoy.
