Palau, a small archipelago in the Western Pacific ocean, part of Micronesia, and generally unheard of by non-divers and non-snorkelers…
This little piece of the world is utterly breathtaking both above and below the water. The islands are mostly uninhabited, with lush jungle growing on the 300+ limestone and volcanic formations, dotting the crystal clear turquoise waters that make up the Republic. With over 700 fish species and more than 1500 coral species inhabiting these beautiful waters, the snorkeling is second to none. It’s not dubbed ‘the underwater Serengeti’ for nothing!
In 2009 the waters around the country were declared the world’s first shark sanctuary, completely protected from commercial shark fishing. As such, the waters are teaming with sharks (mostly grey and whitetip reef and leopard sharks). The sanctuary protects over 600,000 Km2, and in 2014 Palau declared it’s waters a commercial fishing-free zone, banning all such activities. The result has been healthy thriving reef, densely populated with schooling fish, pelagics, sharks, manta (and other) rays, and turtles. One can expect colourful lively reefs, scholling fish, pelagic sightings, various rays and sharks to mention a few.
Above the sea, the green lush islands are simply beautiful, the wild and bird life is wonderful. Having been a pivotal strategic point during the war, there are many interesting historical sites to visit. Many sunken ships in the area have also left great dive and snorkel sites to explore, some of which are virtually artificial reefs now.
This wonderful group snorkel safari will meet in Koror, Palau, before boarding the comfy Palau Aggressor Liveaboard for a week-long snorkel adventure of a lifetime. As with all of our group safari trips, this tour will be fully escorted by an experienced member of our team!
The boat is captained and staffed by experienced crew who know the area inside out, and understand the currents and tides, hence knowing when the water conditions are best to visit the various snorkel sites. There will be experienced guides in the water with snorkelers at all times.
The boat we have chosen, the Palau Aggressor II offers accommodation for 18 guests, in air conditioned staterooms, each fitted with private toilets, showers, sinks, and hair dryers. Breakfast is cooked to order, lunches are served buffet style and dinner is prepared by the chefs and served table-side (usually three courses). In addition there are daily fresh mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks served. The menu aboard is varied and plentiful, with a variety of international dishes, barbecues as well as local cuisine. Beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) are complimentary while on-board. The yacht has a first aid kit on-board, including oxygen and an AED. The Palau Aggressor II is 106’ long with a 30 ft. beam, built and powered for comfort, safety and stability. They have a beautiful spacious salon, 50’ of sun deck with shading, chaise lounges and deck chairs, bar, grill, and a complete photo/video center.
Most snorkel entries are made from the 35’ custom built high speed, outboard skiffs capable of carrying 18 guests for quick access to even the most remote sites. The boarding ladders were designed for convenience to allow for easy exits and entries. The tenders return to the mother ships after each snorkel. Between sessions in the water, one can explore
secluded beaches, or just relax with a cold drink and mid-morning snack.
We have an optional additional 3 day land tour arranged for interested parties who wish to stay in Koror and explore some of the island’s sites. Please inquire directly for more details.
