Situated on a small island off Borneo, in the Maratua Atoll, lies the beautiful Nunukan Island Resort. This environmentally conscious resort was built without damaging the natural vegetation, and is run by predominantly solar power and collected rainwater.
The resort comprises of two main areas- the first being the restaurant, bar and dive center, all overlooking the a long jetty and an unobstructed view of the horizon. The other is on the opposite side of this small island, where beautiful gardens surround the 22 bungalows beachfront. The spa offers various traditional massages and treatments. The chef prepares fabulous Indonesian and international meals which are served at the seaside restaurant.
The diving from here is fabulous and includes access to the resort’s house reef. Here one can find many rare creatures like leaf fish, pygmy seahorses and more. This 4km stretch of reef is made up of healthy lively coral, teaming with tropical fish, critters and turtles.
Other nearby dive sites include Maratua Atoll and the famous “Big Fish Country” site, known for sharks and schooling pelagic fish enjoying the fast moving tidal waters.
Kakaban is also nearby and offers a great opportunity to snorkel with non-stinging jellyfish in a magnificent lake during a surface interval.
Sangalaki, world famous for consistent year round manta ray encounters and also known as a turtle hatchery, offers superb reefs for divers to enjoy.
