Based on the island of Ambon in the eastern Moluccas, Maluku Divers offers a chance to step off the beaten path in search of truly world class muck diving. Whilst the Lembeh Strait has been stealing the limelight for this unique style of diving in recent years we think Ambon is perhaps a more rewarding destination, especially for those willing to travel the extra mile. The remote nature of the resort means you’ll get to experience the dive sites in privacy, something photographers will surely appreciate.
Following a visit in 2009 we also found that Ambon boasts a similar abundance of critters to Lembeh including species such as the magnificent psychedelic frogfish which to this day is thought to be endemic to this particular region. The ‘Laha’ set of dive sites are just incredible A stretch of black sand beach sits directly in front of a small village just a few hundred meters from the resort. These rubbly sand slopes and gullies are home to rhinopiah, flamboyant cuttlefish and ghost pipefish to name a few. A few hundred meters in the other direction and you’ll find the Twilight Zone, a pier dive which hosts magnificent nudibranchs of all shapes and sizes, moray eels and many species of octopus.
Although the emphasis at Maluku Divers is largely focused around muck diving there are some fabulous reefs in close proximity. The southern coastlines of the island reveal some incredible underwater architecture with dramatic archways and healthy reefs which attract a rich diversity of reef fish and pelagics. Pulau Tiga is a set of 3 islands on the western coast with reefs that surely hold their own when compared to the famous sites such as Raja Ampat and Komodo around Indonesia.
Maluku Divers itself is set in a shady mango grove with uninterrupted views out to the open sea and Ambon peninsular. Each bungalow has a specious wooden balcony for relaxing between dives with high pitched interiors, fans and air conditioning. The resort has a dedicated camera room and the setup is very photographer friendly. Delicious meals and snacks are served up throughout the day in the welcoming restaurant.
