Off the coastline of mainland Borneo lies Lankayan Island Resort, a tiny jewel in the Sulu Sea. For families or couples looking for quality diving and a slice of barefoot relaxation we can’t think of a better location. Unpopulated and covered by thick tropical island vegetation this peaceful untouched little piece of paradise is ringed by a pristine white sand beach. During the months of June and September Lankayan Island is a foraging ground for sea turtles, and if you’re lucky you’ll get to see them make their way up the beach to nest. With just 23 wooden beachside chalets there’s never a busy moment at Lankayan Island Resort. A typical day is spent exploring the reefs of local dive sites, kicking back in the hammock with a good book or walking the beach whilst the water laps against your feet.
There are a number of islands surrounding Lankayan all of which offer quality reef diving. Fringing reefs pepper the white sand slopes and play host to vibrant marine life of all shapes and sizes. The pace of diving is relaxed due to the protected nature of the region which should appeal to newly experienced divers looking to build their confidence. Diverse invertebrates and critter species are also commonplace around Lankayan which should surely appeal to photographers who appreciate macro subjects.
