This fully guided small group safari combines Indonesian Borneo’s best dive destinations with a spectacular land tour. Diving off East Kalimantan has a lot to offer, with deep drop offs, amazing channels and remote islands, the area attracts pelagics like manta rays, sharks and various schooling fish. Some of the the better known diving destinations off east Kalimantan include Sangalaki, Kakaban, Maratua and Nabucco. The tour will be based at Nabucco Resort for the first 8 nights, Nunukan for the following 3, and then move on to Samboja Lodge to enjoy the topside beauty of Borneo at this orangutan sanctuary.
Nabucco and Nunukan are sister resorts, both located within the Maratua Atoll, both built with the utmost respect for the natural surroundings on the islands. As such the minimum damage was done to the surrounds in terms of tree culling. The result is two beautiful, but very different resorts.
Nabucco is located in the southeastern part of the atoll, and comprises of 9 bungalows, a stilted ocean-front restaurant and lovely cliff-side bar overlooking the ocean with gorgeous sunset views. Nunukan is located at the southern end of the Maratua Atoll, directly over the outer reef. 22 Spacious bungalows have been inserted into the dense jungle on the west side of the island on a white sandy beach overlooking the lagoon. The restaurant and dive center are on the northeast side of the island where a long jetty takes one out to the outer reef. The sites around both these resorts offer great opportunities to see grey and white tips, schools of barracuda and jacks, large groupers, turtles, eagle rays and manta rays, often playing in groups.
After 11 nights here we will dry off and continue the tour exploring Samboja Lodge. Situated in the orangutan rehabilitation center and wildlife sanctuary. The lodge is situated in the middle of a lush jungle, with breathtaking canopy views from large verandas and spacious rooms. Here we will have a chance to do some light trekking, see wild and rehabilitated orangutans and a variety of other wildlife including monitor lizards, snakes, several bird species, small mammals like deer and wild pigs, and other primates like gibbons, macaques, proboscis and red leaf monkeys.
