This fantastic tour combines the little-dived Christmas Island with the gorgeous West Sumbawa and Komodo National Park to create an exciting itinerary or healthy reefs, deep clear drop offs and pelagic magic.
This tour will start in Jakarta, where the group will meet, and then travel together to Christmas Island. Here we will stay in the lovely Sunset Lodge, a stones throw from Extra Divers, our base for the week. The lodge is on the waterfront and had unobstructed views of the ocean and gorgeous sunsets. The spacious rooms are air-conditioned with televisions and coffee-making facilities. We will do two dives a day for 5 days while here, and then spend a day off-gassing exploring some of the islands topside beauty. The diving is done from speedboats equipped with ladders and were specifically designed for divers. The sites are mostly close to the dive shop, with fringing reefs right off the beach, leading to deep dramatic drop offs, with walls covered in healthy corals. The fish life is prolific and divers have great chances to see manta rays, sharks, turtles, octopus and schooling fish, as well as an array of critters. Also, every year between October and May the island sees whale sharks migrating in the area.
Topside the island is lush and green, with dramatic cliffs, pretty beaches, alive with fabulous birds like frigates, Brown and Abbot’s Boobies and Christmas Island Hawk Owls and more. Walking through the jungle to the hidden beaches on the eastern side of the island is just beautiful.
After an exciting week we travel together to Sumbawa Island, Indonesia, where we make the stunning resort of Kalimaya our base for the next week. Kalimaya resort is beautiful with ocean front rooms, a beautiful pool, delicious food and access to outstanding diving. Kalimaya is the first dedicated dive resort on East Sumbawa Island and the only dive operator offering day trip diving to West Komodo, Gili Banta, and Sangeang Volcano. Kalimaya has a house reef which is a delight to dive, littered with exceptional critters like rhinopia, various octopus and shrimps.
Here we will do two boat dives a day, and unlimited house reef dives are included too. The topography of the area includes sloping reefs, sea mounts, walls, pinnacles and caverns. The variety of coral in the area is second-to-none and the reefs here provide perfect homes for everything from manta rays and reef sharks, to tropical reef fish, to turtles to invertebrates.
