See the highlights of this magnificent Island in this varied itinerary which features truly world class diving at Sipadan Island, arguably the best diving in Borneo, the species rich territories of the Kinabatangan and stunning vistas throughout the Kinabalu National Park.
Our recommended route begins from Kota Kinabalu, an ideal location from which to explore the surrounding highlands including Mt Kinabalu. For the intrepid we can arrange for a guided tour to the top, a two day hike which includes an overnight half way up before an early morning push for the peak in time for sunrise. Cultural tours to the northern corners of Sabah can also be arranged- stay overnight in a traditional style long house and get a flavor for local life in this secluded pocket of Malaysian Borneo.
After 5 nights in the Kinabalu region you’ll head south to the wet lowlands of Kinabatangan, with it’s meandering rivers and dense jungle this is the place for spotting the infamous proboscis monkeys that this region has become so well know for, wild elephants and orangutans are also not uncommon throughout this region. Sukau Rainforest Resort is located on the banks of the river and makes for the perfect base to explore this region, experienced guides will take you through the jungle lined rivers by boat as look out for primates, hornbills and colourful wildlife, you’ll also get a chance to visit Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Program as part of this experience.
The final stage of this tour takes you to Sipadan, an oceanic atoll located off the eastern coast of Sabah with coral encrusted walls that drop to over 600 meters. The islands here make for the best diving in Borneo, as they act as a magnet for sharks, rays and turtles not to mention a wealth of diverse fish life including big bumphead parrotfish, and schools of jacks and barracuda. Your water villa will be located just a short distance away offering easy access to the reef for snorkeling and a morning swim. Itineraries in Borneo can be tailored to suit.
