Encounters with Manta are always special, so we thought we’d put together our 5 choice destinations where you’re more likely to stumble across one than not. Bali is surely a good place to start, from here you can comfortably reach the island of Nusa Penida. The cleaning station found close by often plays hosts to ‘squadrons’ of Manta who pass by so that wrasse can eat and remove bacteria which builds on their skin. Further east the dive site ‘Manta Alley’ is located in the Komodo National Park and certainly deserves its reputation for Manta encounters – both Queen Scuba and Indo Siren cover this region.
Sorido Bay Resort is located on the banks of the Dampier Strait in Raja Ampat. ‘Manta Sandy’ is located just 30 minutes boat ride away, again boasting excellent chances. The list would by no means be complete without including Palau, the channels between the islands often play host to Manta – see Ocean Hunter liveaboards for suitable operators. Last but not least, the Maldives and Hanifaru Bay offers Manta aplenty..more that you’ll ever be able to count – see Maldives Siren.
