Here’s a collection of our choice destinations for getting up close and personal with rare and exquisite marine life – otherwise known as ‘Muck Diving’. If you’re new to this style of diving then this is also a good place to start. As a quick introduction is generally performed by gliding slowly over large plains of black sand in search of weird and wonderful marine life – above all it’s highly addictive and one of our favourite styles of diving.

The Lembeh Strait in Indonesia is literally teeming with tiny critters of all shapes and sizes – rare and colourful slugs, flamboyant cuttlefish, blue ringed octopus and plenty more make for common sightings, plus the black sand provides an ideal backdrop for photographers. Maluku Divers in Ambon is also a top spot and with a more remote location you’ll no doubt get the dive site to yourself. More close to home is Scuba Seraya’s house reef, also known as Seraya Secrets, you can easily clock up a 90 minute dive here. Finally the Philippines have diversity beyond belief, the house reef at Atlantis Resort in Dumaguete is just a few steps from the resort and is ideal for photographers of all ability.
