Here is a short list of the top 5 things I love about Scuba Diving.
- Experiencing a beautiful and different part of our planet.
In my opinion scuba diving is like going on safari in the bush- one gets to explore a part of the world few others do. Scuba divers get to see marine life in it’s natural environment. As pure observers we get to see some fascinating things. It has also nurtured an interest in marine life leading me to learn so much about so many interesting creatures. For example, my disinterest in land based slugs…. but then I discovered nudibranchs and suddenly slugs seem so interesting, on land and in the water,
2. Being outdoors
Much of our time these days is spent indoors and scuba diving means time at the coast enjoying the great outdoors, fresh air and glorious sunshine (or overcast rain). Spending time in and on the ocean is a really calming element in my life, and I feel it helps keep me grounded and in tune with nature.
3. New friends
Scuba diving, like many other hobbies, brings people of various backgrounds together with a shared passion. Thus, one gets to meet interesting people one may otherwise not come across in everyday life. Sharing an amazing experience on a great dive for example, also creates a great bond between people. Some of my closest friends are people I met through scuba diving.
4. Travel
Since learning to scuba dive, I have traveled to many places I would not have previously considered visiting. This has been wonderful and educational and I have been exposed to cultures, foods and vistas I would never have dreamed of.
5. Meditation and calmness
Focusing on slow measured breathing, mindfulness and slow deliberate movements has had a major impact on my life both above and blow the water. Without realising it initially, spending time underwater is akin to meditation, and this practice, which I have now started enjoying on land too, has made my life immeasurably better.
