I was recently on tour in Borneo and spent a few days diving the reefs around the islands of Sipadan and Mabul. 8 years ago the marine park authority of the region declared Sipadan a sanctuary and that only 120 divers would be allowed to visit the island per day. Borneo Divers’ manager as the main operator on the island left in good will to neighboring Mabul Island where they set up a new resort, he could clearly see the impact visitors were having on the reefs and marine life and felt that a move was vital for the conservation of Sipadan. Mabul island is charming in it’s own right and whilst not diving you can explore the entire island on foot, the local village still takes up a large area which is nice to see, with some rather imposing resorts close by it’s good to see the government haven’t decided to move them on. I’d say a large percentage of visitors coming to Mabul would appreciate a walk through the sand paths to see what island living Borneo style is all about – I certainly did!
